North, South, East and West have not much sense on the island of Oahu
August 25th, 2008North, South, East and West have not much sense on the island of Oahu. Sure, there are some references to these points of the compass: The North Shore is known for his big wave surfing and West Oahu is booming with development, but you are much more likely to hear the term Windward Oahu, as you Oahu East, and we have not even started on the local conditions for the alignment of the mauka, makai, ewa and Diamond Head. Consider for a moment the geography of Oahu - it is an island surrounded by water (of course), which rises from the sea around its coast to a series of ridges in the middle. Diamond Head is a prominent coastal landmark is located in the South at the point of the island. These functions are, what are the directions and navigation by those of us who grew up on the island of Oahu. No search for moss on the side of the tree. No sun rises in the east and sets in the west nonsense. Directions are simple and direct. You can Mauka (toward the mountains), or Makai (toward the sea). You can go to Diamond Head (toward Diamond Head crater), or Ewa (away from Diamond Head crater). Since no matter where you are on the island, you can almost always see the ocean, the mountains, and, at least until recently, Diamond Head with these geographical markers, to move from point A to point B sense. To those of us who grew up on Oahu is simple, easy to understand and clear. It is only when you try to explain it is not someone with the island directional approach, that it starts to get confusing. For example, let”s say that you are in the city of Kailua on the Windward side (east) of the island, with a view to the north-Makai then clearly would be on the right (east) and Mauka would be on the left ( or West). Ewa would also be on the left (or West), and Diamond Head would be your Southwest. Let us now say that you are on Pearl Harbor in West Oahu and then back to the north would be ipso facto Makai now on the left (or west) and Mauka would be on the right side (or east.), It would be in Ewa and Would Diamond Head to your Southeast. Now, let”s put before you, while in North Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu. Makai would now North: Mauka, Diamond Head and Ewa everything would be in the south - see how easy to navigate through? Finally, let”s have standing in the Diamond Head Crater on Oahu South and North America. Makai is now in the south, Mauka is in the north, in the Diamond Head and Ewa, the Northwest Passage. With a little practice, and you can be about how you lived on Oahu all your life. If you were to drive around the island in a clockwise makai would always on the left side, but at different times, it would be the North, South, East and West. Likewise mauka would always on the right side, at different times, it would be the North, South, East and West.
